October 21, 2026 at 6:00 AM ET
What happened
Developers have targeted block 3,543,405 for the activation of the Zcash NU7 upgrade, with an estimated arrival around November 5. The proposal, submitted via GitHub by developer Sean Bowe and supported by fellow developers, aims to reduce block generation intervals from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. The upgrade also includes plans to disable the Sprout privacy system and temporarily remove 60% of fees from circulation, with these funds expected to return to miner rewards starting in February 2031. As of October 22, the activation height had been established in the ZIP 259 deployment document, although the specification remained pending final integration into node software. Readiness trackers indicate that synchronization tasks for Zebra nodes and other mainnet preparations are ongoing. Following the developer consensus, the ZEC token price experienced a notable increase in market activity.
Why it matters
The NU7 upgrade represents a significant shift in Zcash infrastructure, prioritizing network throughput and transaction latency. By decommissioning legacy privacy components and modifying block-reward economics, the project is attempting to modernize its operational efficiency, which carries implications for long-term network sustainability and competitiveness within the privacy-focused asset sector.
